Patong Beach Resorts
Monkeys are amazing creatures really, you can find them all over Phuket in Patong and it doesn’t matter whether you are in a budget hotel or a five start hotel. Budget hotels store less food I suppose and therefore fewer monkeys come to “play”. A friend of mine who recently came to Patong for a short visit, stayed at one of the classier but reasonable hotels near Patong beach, during his stay he often sat in the gardens and watched the monkeys. From his observations he started to write a short story about them. Here is an excerpt:
Speak no evil
The view from here is beautiful. I see coconut trees and palm trees, other thick green vegetation and blue ocean. I eat mainly fruit and nuts, play with my friends and occasionally play with the large skin ones. They are my enemies but sometimes they are my friends. They often give me food, they often tease me and when they do that I just bite them. The building here is a hotel, I hear this word often but not sure what it means. There is large blue pond in the green gardens and the skin ones jump and crawl in it. It is a strange place for me, me and my friends we watch and wonder why they come to eat and drink and crawl and then leave. If it was me, I would always eat and drink and not go. They come and then they go everyday new skin ones come, old skin ones go, and do they die? The words I often hear are hotel Patong Phuket, garden, room, waiter, sir, madam, beach and pool. I think these words are about this place but these are the words I hear. Now a skin one is showing me bananas but I know him he is always here, never goes like the others. I won’t try to grab. My baby brother tried to bite him before. He teases us. The skin ones sometimes want to play. I follow them from the hotel to the beach. I jump on them and play and grab their things, then they always chase me-I don’t know why. For now it is mine. “Give me my hat’ or “give me my shades” they shout, so I bite and run. The wise skin ones never play; they are sometimes evil. They killed my mum because she took a shiny stone string from a room. They beat her with sticks. I don’t know why. Patong is my home so I always stay, I can look for food in trees but the skin ones are easy pickings, they have plenty.

Is it any wonder why the monkeys in Patong Phuket are so tame? They see food and want it. And if we are willing to play, ….. Budget hotels may have fewer monkeys but there are still enough tourists who want to play with them in parks etc. My advices to anyone visiting places like Thailand is don’t feed or touch the monkeys, just observe and leave them alone.
